New Media Art is an upper-level art class at McDaniel College. Because the realm of new media is so broad, rather than focusing on one software/skill as a class, students were introduced to a "choose your own adventure" option wherein they could learn the basics of a software and prove their proficiency through a semester-long project. Students worked with Adobe Animate, Adobe After Effects, Unity Game Engine, Vuforia, or Blender 3D. Students had zero previous experience with any of these programs before taking this class. This class is meant to teach instill resourcefulness, persistence, and accountability in students.
In Spring 2020, students shifted from developing augmented reality projects using Unity 3D to an interdisciplinary project about the COVID-19 pandemic. The infographic below conveys the guidelines and timeline of the project.
